If you want to balance color all around your current design, you need to have a comprehensive grasp on your existing color scheme. Next, determine the number of accessories required to make balance. Assume that your bedroom is using a split complementary color scheme. Olive green walls are a key part of this color scheme. You have located the primary complementary tone. As you ponder the components of your room, you will notice that the rust-red carpet offers a complementary color. The rug is a couple of shades darker than the shams and bedspread. Balancing a color palette with mauve can be done by using the color in throw pillows. Add unique wall plaques on the wall that include mauve elements along with the other colors. A mauve matte is an appropriate complement for a collection of watercolors. Selecting mauve in the lamp shades gives a great way to incorporate them into this bedroom. You can use a solitary element in your room's design to connect all of your items to each other like a window treatment.

And, its never been more important to know your colors. Why? Because color is back in a big way! Just look at the vast variety of colors in the department stores.

COMPLIMENTARY COLORS. These are colors that are opposite from one another on the color wheel. Red and green, blue and orange, yellow and violet, are examples of complimentary colors. Complimentary colors are colors of extreme contrast. When used together in a painting, they can produce brilliant vibrant images.

Another satisfactory whitewash can be made by diluting a moderately heavy cold lime paste (about 33 lbs. of hydrated lime and 8 gallons of water) with 5 gallons of skim-milk.

Value refers to how light or dark a color is. Colors like pink or aqua are identified as colors of high value. Colors like maroon and navy are identified as colors of low value. If you produce a painting with predominately higher values, the painting is referred to as a "high key" painting. On the contrary, paintings produced with predominately lower values, are referred to as "low key".

OK, now let it dry overnight. The next day....or whenever you get around to it....mix a lot of Galkyd with just a little bit of color and glaze it over the first layer. Layer upon layer....allowing each layer to dry... is what makes paintings look finished and interesting and expensive in my view. Certainly you can paint wet on wet, as van Gogh did. But that's a much harder proposition we'll talk about later. You can put as many layers as you wish until you get your desired look. A thin glaze of Galkyd with just a little black works great on top of any dried color underneath. It give it an antique and finished look. But be careful not to add too much black. Don't worry, if you put too much just wipe it off and start over. That's the great thing about oil is it dries slower and you can tweak, correct, start over before it dries. Tip: a thin layer of yellow glaze looks good on top of almost any color too. A thin glaze of green looks good over blue, a thin glaze of blue looks good over purple. But ultimately you can pick and choose and experiment with which color to add to your glazes. There are no rules. Invent ones of your own. A thin glaze of yellow on top of a dried layer of red looks awesome. A thin layer of yellow on boring brown make it look like expensive and not-boring brown. You get the idea. But make the process your own and have fun with it. No one will ever do it quite the way you do, and that's what's interesting about the process.
